Half title. Orig. orange cloth; front board a little spotted. Orange pictorial d.w., unclipped; upper edge a little darkened, spine sl. sunned. A nice copy. Issued in New York by the same publisher. The British edition is the American sheets in orange cloth with a different dustwrapper. Falls calls this 'An American novel and one of the oddest the War has yet given birth to. it is not quite clear whether Mr Lohrke intends to launch an onslaught upon the War or upon mothers who bring up their boys badly.' Indeed, his fixation on the latter throws the novel off balance, but its central point - that society had problems before the war - merits engagement, and some of the characters are wonderfully unpleasant.
