January 1st 1884-January 1st 1888 plus a half page with two listings dated January 21st and October 31st, 1889. Printed illus. of a log cabin (cut out) attached to front blank, 13 x 8", 1/4 red leather, marbled boards, 120pp. Covers worn/edge worn, leather scuffed/scraped, inner hinges and textblock cracked, covers loose, occasional light staining and soiling, pages 1-2 are blank as well as 88-119, pages 119-120 have the bottom half neatly removed else good. There are newspaper clippings on pages 6-7; who can vote (Public Acts of 1887 #303), export/import statistics, scale of points for judging Poland-China hogs and a program for the "Farmers' Institute to be held at the Union Hall, Brooklyn, Mich. 1888". P.A. Cady owned a large, profitable farm in Napoleon Township, Jackson County, Michigan where he lived with his wife, children and father. The ledger lists the expenditures such as windmill repair, school books, church windows, tobacco, maple sugar, seeds, harvesting, sow from Burton Boys auction. Income comes from the sale of livestock (pigs, cattle, sheep, chickens), cider, apples, butter, eggs, tallow, property, house rent. Sources of entertainment included various fairs including the State Fair, the soldier's picnic at Wolf Lake and trips to Jackson (one entry says "going in Jackson State Prison" but no further details). Cady makes notes of the weather (how high the mercury etc.), who was elected governor in 1886 (Cyrus G. Luce), that the Farmers Club was organized at J.P. Deans and this little tidbit: written on page 5 "Deyo is a Rev. Preacher Voting with whisky men". A special note regarding his handwriting: he writes his lower case "r's" as rounded capital "E", otherwise handwriting easy to read. Napoleon became a township in 1833 and steadily grew to 1,177 by 1880. You can experience the growth of the community through this ledger. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 22-6195
