NUOVO - The Papal collection of Photographs in the Vatican Library The volume offers a detailed overview of the precious Photographic Collection preserved in the Vatican Library and up to now unknown to scholars. It bears witness to the privileged relationship that photographic science has had since the beginning with the successors of the Chair of Peter. Among the thousands of photographs that make up this e tensive and articulated collection, more than one hundred nuclei have been selected from the most significant to document the typology of the papal collection. Images of documentation of places and events sent to the popes from all continents for various events are analyzed: from Latin America to India, from the churches of Brooklyn to those of the Mid West of the United States, from Formosa to Ceylon, from Me ico to Pisa, from the earthquake in Calabria to Cologne, from the bombing of Montecassino to the arrival of Armenian refugees in Damascus in 1921, from the signing of the Concordat in 1929 to the construction of the Christ on Mount Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro. The photographs are presented in chronological order, by pontificate, from Pius I (1846-1878) to Pius II (1939-1958). Il volume offre una dettagliata panoramica sulla preziosa Raccolta fotografica conservata presso la Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana e fino ad oggi sconosciuta agli studiosi. Essa è testimonianza di quel rapporto privilegiato che fin dalle origini la scienza fotografica ha avuto con i successori della Cattedra di Pietro. Fra le migliaia di fotografie che compongono questa ampia e articolata raccolta sono stati selezionati oltre cento nuclei tra quelli maggiormente significativi per documentare la tipologia della collezione papale. Vengono analizzate immagini di documentazione di luoghi ed eventi inviate ai pontefici da tutti i continenti in occasione di diversi eventi: dall'America Latina all'India, dalle chiese di Brooklyn a quelle del Mid West degli Stati Uniti, da Formosa a Ceylon, dal Messico a Pisa, dal terremoto in Calabria a Colonia, dal bombardamento di Montecassino all'arrivo dei rifugiati armeni a Damasco nel 1921, dalla firma del Concordato nel 1929 alla costruzione del Cristo del Monte Corcovado di Rio de Janeiro.
