First Edition. A mite shaken but overall Fine decorative binding, w/o dustwrapper as issued. Decorative endpapers. 23 wood engraving illustrations by H. S. Delay. These plates are wildly thrilling. The novel alone (a detective/mystery novel of wild west action) would be a treasure of any collection, but there is an "unrelated" appendix to this book that provides additional wonder. Following an engraved portrait of the author and a statement about sign language education of the deaf, there is an essay titled "The Hard-of-Hearing Speechless Children in our Schools for the Deaf: Paper Read by R. S. Rhodes, of Chicago, at the 14th Convention of American Teachers of the Deaf, at Flint, Michigan." This strikes me as an important contribution to the history of deaf education and I wonder if it is virtually "unknown" because hidden at the back of a pioneer adventure novel.
