165 x 100 mm. (6 1/2 x 4"). Two volumes. QUITE ATTRACTIVE DARK GREEN STRAIGHT-GRAIN MOROCCO, HEAVILY GILT, covers framed by lattice-work of intersecting circles, quatrefoils at corners, central panel with thin rope roll frame, oblique pointillé tulips at corners, raised bands, spine panels with large centerpiece formed by fleurons and curving vines sprinkled with tiny dots, gilt lettering, turn-ins with border of gilt dots, dun-colored endleaves, all edges gilt. EACH VOLUME WITH A LOVELY FORE-EDGE PAINTING, that on volume I a tranquil rural landscape, and on volume II a riverbank by Olney Bridge. With extra engraved title pages and 10 engravings after Richard Westfall, one a charming portrait of Cowper at his desk, gazing sadly at a picture of his mother, while on the floor beside him, his pet rabbit calmly munches lettuce leaves. Front free endleaves inscribed in ink: "Ludovique Reindorf / from her affec[tion]ate Friend / Agnes White / July 14th 1890." â Very slight wear to corners, offsetting on pages opposite plates, very minor foxing, but a fresh, clean copy internally, the very pretty bindings lustrous and virtually unworn, and the fore-edge paintings especially well preserved. Featuring beautifully executed paintings under the fore-edge gilt, these volumes collect the poetry by one of the most notable English poets of the 18th century, chronicling his journey away from worldly things towards nature and religion. Cowper (1731-1800) prefigures the Romantics in the confessional tendency of his verse. Although his bouts of melancholy were at times so severe as to lead to suicide attempts and institutionalization, Cowper had a lighter side that often surfaced in playful poems and charming letters. It is not surprising, then, that his poems range widely, from religious reflections to translations of Homer to poetry inspired by a lady's suggestion that he could write on any topic, including the sofa. The charming rural scene on the fore-edge of volume is framed by two large trees in the foreground, beyond which we see a red-roofed cottage set among a grove of trees, with rolling hills in the background. The field below the cottage is recently mown, and dotted with haystacks. All is calm and order: serene blues and greens dominate the color scheme, with neat rows of haystacks and peaceful solitude exuded by the cottage almost hidden by trees. The painting on volume II invites us to contrast technology with nature and humanity: it features a precise, clean-lined bridge set beside the random curves of nature. A river winds through hilly banks, and rounded trees are scattered in the distance. Just under the bridge, on the river bank, sit a man and boy, the elder appearing to console the dejected youth, the pair dwarfed by a massive engineering feat that looms overhead. Happily, our wonderfully detailed and artfully composed paintings have retained both their original hues and their appeal over the years. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers ST16942

Bound by Taylor and Hessey With an Early Twentieth Century Fore-Edge Painting [FORE-EDGE PAINTING]. TAYLOR & HESSEY, binder. COWPER, William. Poems by William Cowper, of the Inner Temple, Esq. In two volumes. A New Edition. London: Printed for J. Johnson and Co., 1811. With an early twentieth century fore-edge painting by an unidentified artist, showing a man and two ladies seated by a fireplace. The man is reading his newspaper and a dog is seated at his feet. Two octavo volumes bound in one (8 5/16 x 5 1/4 inches; 211 x 133 mm.). [i]-xvi, [1]-438; [i]-vi, [2], [1]-427, [1, blank] pp. Bound ca. 1811 by Taylor and Hessey, Booksellers, London. Stamp-signed in gilt on the fore-edges of the boards "Bound and Sold by" [&] "Taylor and Hessey". Full dark red straight-grain morocco, covers elaborately paneled in gilt, spine with three 'double' raised bands, elaborately decorated and lettered in gilt in compartments, decorative gilt board-edges and turn-ins, later pink endpapers, all edges gilt. Soundly but rather crudely rebacked with the original spine laid down. "Taylor & Hessey were busy throughout these fifteen years [1808-1823], not only in publishing and in binding, but also in re-binding books published by others. They issued, among other works, Pope's translation of the Iliad and Thomson's Seasons; but they also put fine bindings upon books by Milton, Crabbe, Cowper, Scott, and others, published by Johnson, or by Sharpe, or by Hatchard, or by Reeves, or by Longman Taylor & Hessey usually bound their fine books in moroccored, blue, brown, crimson, greenand "signed" their bindings by stamping their name in gilt in the fore-edge of the binding (not the leaves, note), whenever the boards inside the leather were thick enough to carry the name of the firm (C.J. Weber, Fore-Edge Painting, pp. 106-7). Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 05169

212 x 130 mm. (8 3/8 x 5 1/8"). Two volumes. Attractive contemporary maroon straight-grain morocco, gilt, cover framed by decorative cresting roll, raised bands, two spine panels with large fleuron, one with a mandorla, and two with gilt lettering, gilt turn-ins, all edges gilt. EACH VOLUME WITH A FORE-EDGE PAINTING, one depicting Cowper's residence at Olney, the other his house at Weston. With frontispiece portrait, two engraved titles with vignettes, and eight engraved plates of scenes from the poems (two of these fatal equestrian accidents). Front pastedowns with engraved armorial bookplate of Frederick Lambert and library label of Garratts Hall Library. âSpines sunned to chocolate brown, a bit of rubbing to joints, spines, and extremities, some offsetting from plates, occasional mild browning, other trivial defects, but an appealing set, the binding wear not at all noticeable, and the fore-edge paintings very well preserved. Featuring works by one of the most notable English poets of the 18th century, these attractive volumes are decorated under their gilt fore edges with two extremely well-painted scenes appropriately related to the contents here. Cowper (1731-1800) prefigures the Romantics in the confessional tendency of his verse, which chronicles his journey away from worldly things towards nature and religion. Although his bouts of melancholy were at times so severe as to lead to suicide attempts and institutionalization, Cowper had a lighter side that often surfaced in playful poems and charming letters. The very pleasing fore-edge paintings here depict Orchard Side, the house in Olney where Cowper resided from 1768 to 1786 (now the Cowper & Newton Museum), and Cowper's Lodge in Weston Underwood, his home from 1786 to 1795 and currently a private residence little changed from what we see here. The work is recognizable as that of the so-called "Dover Painter," typically executed with considerable skill through the application of small dabs of paint. His method was especially effective in depicting convincing texture for skies, trees, shrubs, and grass. And, as seen here, he produces soft azure skies and convincing puffy white and gray clouds that are distinctively his work. "Dover Painter" is the name given by Jeff Weber to the person who painted in the 1920s and '30s, probably for the famous London bookseller Marks & Company. A number of his works found their way into the library of Edward and Estelle Doheny, which was certainly the most outstanding collection to be sold at auction during the 1980s, and which was particularly rich in fore-edge paintings. Our volumes once resided in the library of Surrey antiquary Frederick Arthur Heygate Lambert (1857-1929) at his country home, Garratts Hall. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers ST19650
