xii+438, 5 small woodcuts in text, red-tinted edges; main fault is a heavily foxed t.p.,endpapers and paste=downs also lightly tanned a few spots up to p.1 and occ. elsewhere, two leaves partly detached along gutter, small early calligraphic name stamp top front end-paper, otherwise internally clean and unmarked with good end-gutters. Later grey-green cloth covers clean, slight spine end and extremity rubbing. This edition is 'revised and enlarged' from 1835 3rd ed., itself enlarged from 2 1834 eds. Author was brother of eminent phrenologists George Combe. This work enjoyed great success in the US as well as UK. He discusses 'mental exercise' and insanity at length as well as physical health.
