Print; extracted from Beyer's Album of Virginia, an oblong folio, 16 /3/4 x 24 1/4". One of forty tinted lithographic plates, as well as title leaf. The lithography was in fact done on the continent, by Rau & Son in Dresden.~~The German-born artist Edward Beyer was active in the United States from 1848 to 1857 and is remembered primarily for this Album of Virginia. This View from the Peak of Otter depicts several men, one with a telescope, taking in the view.~~Most of the scenes in Beyer's Album are from the Valley of Virginia, and depict the soft contours of the mountains of Virginia. All of them have a soft, luminous quality, with great appeal. "This collection of forty-one views is one of the most pleasant of American color-plate books to behold" [McGrath, 88]. ~~This plate has some toning; it has faded, and is framed with mat.
