Beschreibung
First edition. Octavo. 373pp. Illustrated from photographs. Dark greenish-blue cloth stamped in gilt (also seen in pale blue and brownish-red cloth). Owner's early pencil name on front fly, a little foxed on the titlepage, else fine without dust jacket. The autobiography of a Russian immigrant, Antin emigrated to the United States, with her family, in the 1890's. She became interested in liberal Judaism, women's issues, and trancendentalism. Her autobiography, The Promised Land, published in 1912, was both a critical and popular success, and some see it as having established the genre of immigrant autobiography [see Blain. *Feminist Companion to Literature in English*, p. 27].
