The hero, Bruce Pomeroy, a young, self-made captain of industry, is encountered on the verge of a financial coup which he knows will net him millions. On his usual morning walk through Central Park, New York, however, he makes the mistake of stopping to help a lady apparently in distress, gets knocked unconscious for his gentlemanly troubles, and is drugged and transported to a sea-girt island somewhere off a northern coast. It is soon apparent that his situation as prisoner there is curious?to say the least. Far from being professional thugs, his captors are actually a family of charming Russian aristocrats. At first, Pomeroy is furious at being kept from his work in the city. Also, he is completely baffled as to what it is his abductors want. How he subsequently discovered their purposes, as well as the tragic circumstances behind their actions, will be left entirely for the reader to discover, along with all of the strange adventures that the hero experienced while on the island. Suffice it to say that in the course of events, Pomeroy resists the brash advances of one of the Russian women only to fall in love with another, successfully extricates himself from his difficulties, and emerges considerably wiser in his knowledge of certain ways of life other than his own. For pure entertainment, this novel has everything?credibility, sustained suspense, sparkling dialogue, good characterizations?and, above all, continuous action from the first page to the last.
