Inhaltsangabe: "POCO PANE, POCO VINO: a little bread, a little wine" is more than a cookbook. Recipes and etchings are intertwined with food and wine fables and facts -- from prehistoric to contemporary time. Artist and author Gina Gigli traces "edible legends" with her sketched and etched illustrations and builds a collage of culinary history in each chapter with husband Ruggero Gigli's Italian menus. Chef Gigli's recipes are the very same ones that he serves each weekend evening in his Villa Gigli Trattoria in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Guests come to the tiny town of Markleeville, California (population 165) in search of simple, earthy Toscano-style food. Former Florentine baker Gigli reveals the secrets of his culinary success for the first time as he tells how he creates his homemade bread, pasta and original sauces. Readers will be able to learn "Kitchen Italian" by following his recipes and glancing at the Italian-to-English glossary. The heart-healthy Mediterranean Trio of grapes, grain and olives is highlighted throughout the book and used to illustrate the front and back covers and frontispiece. Though the 200-page book has a soft cover, the large format, coated paper and full-page plates combine to call out, "Coffee Table Book".
Vom Autor: Collecting culinary legends to go with Ruggero's recipes was a challenge, but the most effort went into transcribing Ruggero's instructions into English language and his ingredients into American measurements. His expression,"Throw a Handful of Polenta in the Pot" almost became the title of this book, until I realized that "Poco Pane, Poco Vino" says it all. Collecting the art work was easy: my portfolio was already filled with Italian and Californian wine-theme drawings.
