In Latin. 1716 'Editio Nova' Apud Balthasaris ab Egmont Socios (Cologne, Germany), 3 x 5 3/8 inches tall leather bound, gilt ruling to spine and both boards, marbled endpapers, extra engraved title page, illustrated with several full page engravings, [26], 513, [3], 60 pp. Slight to moderate soiling, rubbing and edgewear to covers, with bumping to tips and cracking to frontb exterior hinge, though the binding holds quite firmly. Soiling to page edges. Prior owner name in period hand to blank front free-endpaper. Otherwise, apart from slight creasing to a few page tips, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this uncommon edition. ~UUU~ In Latin. Jacob Merlo Horstius (1597-1644), born in Horst, Holland (from whence he derives his name), was a prominent doctor of theology known as an effective preacher at the Lyskirchen in Cologne, where he served as pastor. The Paradisus Animae, which has gone through many editions in the original Latin since its 1644 first edition, was long a favorite prayer book among Catholics. Several English translations appeared, one as early as 1670, as 'Paradise of the Christian Soul.' It was translated into French by Nicolaus Fontane, under the title 'Heures Chretiennes, Tirnes de l'Ecriture et des Saints Peres.' In addition to his influential edit, with commentary, of the works of Thomas a Kempis (author of 'Imitation of Christ'), Horstius authored and edited numerous books, including a highly respected commentary of Estius on the Pauline Letters, the works of St. Bernard and this, an often translated and reprinted collection of prayers for the Catholic faithful, first published (in Latin) the year Horstius died, 1644. Leather Bound. Zustand: Good. In Latin. 1716 'Editio Nova' Apud Balthasaris ab Egmont Socios (Cologne, Germany), 3 1/8 x 5 5/8 inches tall leather bound, four raised bands and faded gilt lettering to spine, extra engraved title page, illustrated with several full page engravings, [26], 513, [3], 60 pp. Moderate to heavy soiling, rubbing and edgewear to covers, with bumping to tips and cracking to front exterior hinge, which appears to have been glued at some point, though the binding holds quite firmly. Soiling to page edges. Ink monastic inscription to front pastedown. Small upper corner section of the blank front free-endpaper has been neatly excised, presumably to remove a prior owner name. Otherwise, apart from slight creasing to a few page tips, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this uncommon edition. ~UUU~ [Jacob Merlo Horstius (1597-1644), born in Horst, Holland (from whence he derives his name), was a prominent doctor of theology known as an effective preacher at the Lyskirchen in Cologne, where he served as pastor.
