Beschreibung
Noted American poet and author Willis Vernon-Cole's tale of crime, mystery and desire in early-century Manhattan, with episodes occurring primarily on Park Avenue. Collectible first and only printing. Cole's last novel and only novel with a contemporary setting. Published by the Writer's Guild of New York, of which he served as president. Inscribed and signed by Vernon-Cole on title page recto as a poem written specifically for Countess de Lagarde thus: "Madame [illegible] de Lagarde | Whose lips are fragrant roses; | Whose eyes transform t[o] lakes | Reflecting in a[n] eternal charm, | The smile which from them breaks, | Whose soul is like a garden | Where perfumed flowers blow | Rich promises of paradise | And streams of pleasure flow. | The palate[sp] of the artist fails; | Poeticizing bards | Are mute to sing your loveliness, | Fair Countess de Lagarde. | Your friends | The Vernon Coles. | "La [illegible] | 2 Decembre '28." Inscription and signature unconditionally guaranteed to pass any COA examination. Bound in orange cloth with black lettering to front and spine panels. Stunning gold endpapers with scene of Park Avenue couple looking over balcony into a busy street. Star stamped to half title page, possible indicating ownership. Scarce. No other copies listed in commerce at the time of this posting. 281 pp. 7 3/4" x 5 1/4". Tight, unmarked copy with light bumping to extremities and faint soiling to board cloth. A presentable copy of an important NYC collectible. Photographs of or additional information about this item are available on request. All inquiries answered promptly.
