Hi, I’m Nick Pernisco, also known as the Parkinson’s Warrior. I’d like to tell you about my book - a book I wish I had read when I was first diagnosed!

In the book I tackle the difficult issues. I don’t just give you information you can find online. I tell you about my own journey, which decisions I made along the way, and why.

I talk about telling my friends and family about my diagnosis, and the surprising responses from some. I discuss my favorite exercises, my favorite foods, and my favorite supplements. I also talk about various medications I’ve taken, and some I will never take.

Finally, I also attempt to motivate you to live your best life. I offer you stories of resilience, stories of self-empowerment, and help you find the courage to go on.

The book was written in collaboration with doctors, neurologists, naturopaths, therapists, and other health providers. I also spoke to my friends in the Parkinson’s community and share some of their thoughts as well.

After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease at the age of 33, Nick Pernisco thought his world was ending. He could no longer teach and went through a long period of depression – constantly asking himself “why me?” This is the story of what came next. Determined to turn his life around, Nick learned all he could about Parkinson’s, including everything about the benefits and side effects of Parkinson’s medications, the potential and limitations of natural therapies, the importance of proper nutrition, and the need for physical and emotional fitness. He began eating better, exercising regularly, and re-engaging with society. He changed his thinking about life and disease and adopted a positive attitude. In 2011 Nick was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease - a disease typically affecting those over 60 - at age 33. After enduring a prolonged period of depression, he found a way to move beyond his grief and fight back by taking control of his disease, and using his experiences to educate and advocate for others. From this mission, the Parkinson's LifeKit app was born. The app is used by thousands of Parkinson's patients to help them take control by tracking symptoms and fitness, managing medication, and more accurately reporting on their condition to their doctors. In 2018 he launched Parkinson's Warrior, a Parkinson's news and resource website, which serves as a guide to adopting a Warrior Mindset to take control of each day and each battle in pursuit of improved quality of life. In addition to being an author, app developer, and advocate, Nick is also a media studies professor. He has lived in Buenos Aires, Los Angeles, Seattle, and most recently, Amsterdam, where he lives with his wife and two cats.
