Good hardback. 18th edition. 18th edition, 1830, with all maps checked and present; tightly bound in tan leather with gilt tooling to all sides; spine has been re-backed but original leather covers have been retained for front and back; date at base of spine is 1831 but owner's inscription on title page gives 1830 (twice); wear to edges and corners. Page fore-edges marbled. Internally, archival tape has been used to reinforce front hinge; both paste-downs have evidence of having had a book plate adhered to them; title page has been slightly trimmed; initial pages have scattered foxing; a few discolouration marks scattered throughout but text always clear and readable; overall, an interesting old book in good condition. Hardcover. Zustand: Good to Very Good. 715 pages including Title page + folding map of London to Holyhead at page 178 + Appendix of iv pages including Title page + i + 44 pages + 8 folding plates (11 maps) at rear. Main book not dated either on title or dedication pages, but Appendix Title page states 18th edition & advertisement page is dated 1828. But almost hidden on Title page mentions 1831 census, so this 1828 edition was updated & published c1831/2. Condition; Lacks spine, with incorrect full leather covers in good condition, size aprox 13.5 x 21cm . Contents Very good, clean & tight, only noticed a couple of pages with a little minor foxing, did not see any inscriptions. Has mottled endpage front & rear. The Main book states map opposite title page & map opposite page 179 & 7 plates rear, Appendix lists one map, This copy just lacks the general map opposite title page but contains all other maps called for (even though binder has made a mistake with a couple of the plate numbers and plates that should be at rear of main text are at end of Appendix with the Appendix map at very end). Includes topographical sketches of the several cities, market towns, and remarkable villages; and descriptive accounts of the principal seats of the nobility and gentry, the antiquities, natural curiosities, and other remarkable objects throughout the Kingdom: the whole remodelled, augmented, and improved, by the addition of numerous new roads and new measurements, and arranged upon a plan at once novel, clear and intelligible, is deduced from the latest and best authorities: including a table of the heights of mountains from the grand trigonometrical survey of the Kingdom; also a table of the population, from the census of 1831; to which is annexed the arrival and departure of the mail together with the rates of postage; and an entirely new set of maps. The maps are, The Holyhead Road, Isle of Thanet, Deal to Hythe, Hythe to Rye, Rye to Eastbourne, Eastbourne to Shoreham, New Shoreham to Chichester, Chichester to Fareham, Country round Southampton, Isle of Wight, Lakes of Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire, also map of the Banks of the Wye; (all are fold-outs, 6 maps are on 3 fold-outs). The eighteenth edition was first published in 1826 and reissued several times with updates, book dealers commonly date most to 1828, this copy was printed/published c1832. The book is based on Paterson's British Itinerary originally published in 1785 (that had less routes/maps & other info). Size: 13.5 x 22cm Approx. So to sum up This is a c1832 copy in very good condition, better than most, but lacking the General Map at front) & spine with different full leather covers binding. Warning as many copies have plates/maps missing etc. Very important with this Title, Please check listings before purchasing any other copy that do not list the plates/maps present as even different 18th editions do not always the same contents/plates.
