Cover restored: the top edge is set with paper of the same colour as the browned top. The cover drawing stands out excellently. Spine faded. A bit askew. Fairly good copy of the first edition of this unsurpassed decadent novel with a homosexual-sadomasochistic slant, which deserves even more study (and has finally been translated into German and English!). Eekhoud's foreword puts the novel in its place as a contribution to the emancipation of homosexuality, by bringing up modern scientific research, such as that of Moll and Krafft-Ebing. In the context of modern belles lettres he very adequately mentions Oscar Wilde, who 'was sentenced to a horrible punishment, for actions that had not harmed anyone's freedom in the least. Actions that were in no way inferior, and with which he had certainly not harmed anyone of that group of good people who acted as his accusers.' The French-speaking Fleming Eekhoud then mentions Wilde's French defenders Mirbeau, Fouqier, Adam, Regnier and Rebell. In the period around 1908, the year in which this book appeared, work was also done on setting up a French section of the WhK of Magnus Hirschfeld (ultimately without result). In 1909 the luxurious magazine Akademos, aimed at homosexuals, was founded, to which Eekhoud contributed enthusiastically - but only for one year. Pathologieën thus also stands as a monument in an international movement. The creator of the exciting cover has unfortunately always remained unknown. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 254579
