Caporal de la Garde nationale de Paris, membre de l'Académie de Caen et traducteur de l'allemand en français, il est l auteur d ouvrages de poésie et abrégés majoritairement pour la jeunesse. Néanmoins, il est surtout connu pour sa traduction de 1836 de la Conquête du Mexique par Fernand Cortez de Joachim Heinrich Campe souvent rééditée. Le présent ouvrage reprend des extraits de relations de voyages en orient et Moyen-Orient avec pour destinations notables : La Mecque, les îles Célèbes en 1828, les îles Moluques (Indonésie), la Perse, Médine, Malacca (Malaisie), la Palestine et la Syrie (Alep et Bagdad), l empire Birman, Pékin, l Inde. L illustration est composée de 3 planches hors-texte : "Pèlerins se rendant à La Mecque", "Baie de Malacca et barques malaises" et "Rencontres avec des voleurs arabes". Full speckled calf, smooth spine decorated and titled with green morocco, roulette on the edges, marbled edges and endpapers (binding rubbed). A corporal in the Paris National Guard, member of the Académie de Caen and translator from German into French, he is the author of works of poetry and abstracts mainly for young people. However, he is best known for his 1836 translation of Joachim Heinrich Campe's Conquest of Mexico by Fernand Cortez, which has been reprinted many times. The present work contains extracts from travel reports on the East and Middle East, with notable destinations including Mecca, the Celebes Islands in 1828, the Moluccas (Indonesia), Persia, Medina, Malacca (Malaysia), Palestine and Syria (Aleppo and Baghdad), the Burmese Empire, Peking and India.
