FIRST EDITION. Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD- condition. The story of a little boy who travels to a faraway country on the back of his goldfish. A very scarce and unique children's book with full page images and text on facing pages. 25 pages. 11.5 x 9 inches. ** Binding is secure and intact. Inside pages are free of marginalia and highlighting and generally clean. Pages are lightly tanned with some signs of aging. Boards are moderately soiled with rough edges exposing board at 3 corners and along front lower edge. Paper over boards shows some light scuffing. Buckram spine is secure, with ends that are bumped and softened. Front hinge feels a bit loose at tail. Plate 11 is a facsimile reproduction, with text added to verso. This page was professionally added by a binder skilled in book restoration. ** Jewish artist Tom Seidmann-Freud (1892-1929) was a pioneer in the field of Hebrew book illustration during a short but significant period in Berlin after the First World War. [The National Library of Israel] This niece of the famous Sigmund Freud adopted a man's name in her teens so that her art would be given a fair chance by the European patriarchal art world. This is one of her best known delightful children's books that endured despite the holocaust. An artist of the avant-garde movement, her work has also been described as surreal, modern, dreamy, and even "whimsically apocalyptic" by one critic.
