Über diesen Titel

Reporter Laura Ackroyd's rash acceptance of a dangerous assignment from her editor at the Bradfield Gazette gets her in hot water in more ways than one. Out to cover the prostitutes in this Yorkshire town's red light district, she dresses up to be inconspicuous and ends up arrested for soliciting. To be discovered in the cells and rescued by DCI Michael Thackeray, with whom she has a tumultuous relationship, is downright humiliating.

As if that weren't bad enough, the discovery of a young woman's body only a few hundred yards away and only a few hours later turns Laura's assignment of a simple story about prostitution into a much more dangerous proposition.

Patricia Hall's mysteries are lauded for their tight plotting and also for the humanity and depth of her characters. With Perils of the Night, Hall delivers another tense and absorbing story that is driven as much by the suspense as it is by her compelling and believable depiction of Ackroyd and Thackeray's complicated relationship.

From Kirkus Reviews:

Bradfield's Chief Inspector Michael Thackeray (The Dead of Winter, 1997, etc.), fettered by his own past tragedy, is not yet fully committed to his reporter girlfriend Laura Ackroyd. At the moment, he has his hands full with the bloody killing of young college student Louise Brownlow and with the disappearance of her roommate Jane Watson, both residents of Roz Jenkins's boardinghouse. Louises death may have a connection to the suicide attempt of local Vicar Miles Bateman, seen entering her house the night of her demise. Meantime, Laura's story for the Bradfield Gazette focuses on the town's notorious prostitution trade, in which impoverished students sometimes compete with the pros and infuriate their handlers. Her story also deals with the damage often inflicted on children by their high-placed, reportedly abusive fatherslike, for instance, Janes father, Lord Boulter, who vehemently denies all such allegations in his own case. The answers this time, though, are found unexpectedly elsewhere, almost costing the life of Kevin Brower, Thackeray's second in command. Potent, suspenseful, and a delicate sounding board for the psychological quandaries abounding here. Another winner for author Hall. -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
