First Edition. Black blind stamped cloth boards with gold lettering on spine. Pages have light age toning and foxing. A few gatherings of pages are detached in center of book. All pages are present, however. Previous owner's inked stamp on title page. George Wood was an American writer and chief of a division in the U.S. Treasury Department; born in Newburyport, MA, in 1799; died at Saratoga, NY, Aug. 24, 1870. He published: ?Peter Schlemihl in America? (1848); ?The Modern Pilgrim? (1855); ?Marrying Too Late? (1856); ?Future Life? (1858), reissued as ?The Gates Wide Open? (1869). Inv. # 10178.
