1 sheet, 8 X 12.5 in., once side only. This is a petition addressed to the Commissioners of Dakota County, Nebraska asking that a ferry be built across the Missouri River at Dakota City. This petition is signed by 11 of Dakota County's most prominent residents and dated April, 1867 in pencil on the verso. "To Hon. Board of County Commissioners of Dakota County of Nebraska your petition residents of said County Respectfully requests that a ferry is needed on the Missouri River at Dakota City in said county and asks that said ferry may be leased according to law at the earliest practical moment." Signed by all eleven petitioners including Charles F. Eckhart, L.D. Norris, Wm. S. Craig, Wm. Adair, B. Bates, R. Goodwin, J.P. Eckhart, William Leach, Moses Krebs, James Stoll and Chas. S. Griffin. Eckhart was a prominent hardware merchant in Dakota City. William Stewart Craig was the founder of the town of Craig, Nebraska in Burt County, Nebraska. James Stoll was elected Marshall of Nebraska City in 1856. William Adair was Treasurer of Dakota County. Colonel Barnabas Bates arrived in Dakota City in 1857, built the prominent Bates House hotel, and served as the town's mayor and as a member of the 6th Nebraska Territorial Legislature. There is no date on this document but there is a brief pencil inscription on the verso which reads "Filed April 1867" so thus the date. Nebraska was granted statehood in March of 1867. One of Nebraska's oldest communities, the site of Dakota City, was first visited by the Lewis and Clark Expedition, which reached the mouth of Omaha Creek on August 16, 1804. A town was not advanced until the location was designated as county seat shortly after Dakota County was established in 1855. A town site was platted the following year. J.D.M.Crockwell, an agent for the Dakota City Land Company formed by Augustus Kountze, chose the name in honor of the Dacotah (Sioux) Indians. The original plat called for a town two-miles wide from east to west, with its eastern end abutting the Missouri River. Showing remarkable growth, Dakota City was incorporated on April 5, 1858.
