Beschreibung
Oblong quarto measuring 13" x 12". String-tied brown cloth over stiff paper board with an illustration of a man with a guitar leaning on a cactus. Contains 296 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1" x 1" and 5" x 7" with captions. Very good album with detached but present pages, chips, and worn edges with near fine photographs. A photo album kept by J. Donnellan while traveling cross country on a trip in the 1930s with the American Legion, of which he was a member. Many of the photos are out of order and don't show the trip chronologically. The album begins with the travelers, including men and women members of the American Legion, boarding a train and making their way through Southern California stopping in Santa Barbara, Riverside, and Los Angeles. Here they visited Warner Brothers studio, Death Valley, and photographed palm trees. They stayed at the Mission Inn and one photo shows a uniformed American Legion man posed with a Native American. Following this they went on the Grand Canyon, where they horseback road through trails, Salt Lake City, and Albuquerque, New Mexico. These photos include views of landmarks, local people, cacti, and American Legion members in uniform posed around them, one of these photos is captioned "cactus hunters." Another photo is captioned "Indian dance" and shows a slightly blurry image of Native Americans in traditional clothing dancing with drums. A section of photos from Colorado shows sights around Colorado Springs with images of the Garden of the Gods with various rock formations captioned. The final city they visited was Kansas City and many of the travelers are seen posed in front of the Kansas WWI memorial. The last few pages of the album are from various other American Legion activities in 1938 including a parade, a trip to New York, and a "drum corp outing." These photos show the parade, various color guards, and friends and family. Some of the women members of the Legion are seen posed in photo booth portraits with humorous captions. One of the parade photos shows a woman buying a pretzel with a caption which reads, "what, no beer?" A nice collection of photos detailing a 1930s trip out west and American Legion activities.
