Beschreibung
Octavo measuring 6" x 9". Blue cloth boards with "photographs" stamped on the front board. Contains 98 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2" x 3" and 3" x 4" with some captions on the verso. A cracked hinge and worn edges thus a good photo album with fine photographs. A photo album depicting a British family in China at the turn of the century. Throughout the album the family is seen in Chinese cities with photos of pagodas, on horseback, and in a Chinese garden in Macao. A majority of the album takes place by water and in various boats including several photos of junks and Western sail boats, many of which are steam powered. One photo shows the Russian cruiser *Askold* while it was being repaired in Shanghai as well as a British gunboat and a French cruiser at Kuikiang. Other photos show the Chinese coast with photos of Orphan Rock on the Yangtse and the North Saddle Light House. The sailors and passengers are seen on board the Way Foong and other ships in pith hats and fashions of the time. One photo shows someone lying in a bed below deck on one of the vessels; another is captioned "the skipper and his crew" of a British man in a straw hat and three Chinese deck hands. An interesting look at turn of the century boating and British expatriates in China. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 404658
