Oblong folio measuring 14" x 10.5". White leather album with gilt details. Contains 107 albumen photographs measuring between 3" x 5" and 8" x 10" with captions. Very good album with waviness to the pages and some darkening on the margins not affecting the photographs. A large album of travel photographs from a trip to Europe between 1877 and 1878. The album begins with an ownership label and signature of H.S. Mumford. Compiled throughout the album are photographs, both commercial and amateur, following a year long trip through Europe. The commercial items feature a small studio stamp for Ziegler, Paris. Many of the images show landscape images of lakes, mountains, and countryside as well as historic buildings. Mumford visited most of the major European countries of the day including France, Germany, Austria, Greece and Italy, among others. While in each country his party stopped in multiple cities visiting tourist attractions, capturing the architecture, and admiring the natural beauty of cities such as Dresden, Verona, and Venice. There are few human subjects in the album, the exception being a portrait of a mother with her two sons captioned, "a family scene - Naples." Historic sites are visited throughout the album including the ruins of Pompeii, the Colosseum, and St. Stephen's Church in Vienna. Additionally included are reproduction images of famous artwork and illustrations of sites that did not permit photography. Most of the photos are large format and offer beautiful scenes from an extensive world tour.
