Beschreibung
Oblong folio measuring 15" x 11". String-tied stiff paper boards with hand-drawn titles. Contains 15 sepia-toned albumen photographs measuring between 3.5" x 3.5" and 5" x 7" with captions. Very good album with chips, tears, and rubbing with about near fine photographs. A photo album compiled by a group of Philadelphians who journeyed from the city to Meshoppen, Pennsylvania in the summer of 1894. Each page is beautifully hand decorated with illustrations, calligraphy, and other embellishments as well as dried flowers and ferns. The album begins with a newspaper clipping describing the trip surrounded by the name of the travelers in illuminated calligraphy, including the chaperone, Mrs. S.S. Wenzelle. Following this is the traveler's itinerary which began on July 17th with their departure from Philadelphia. A page from July 23rd shows men posed with a dancing bear with dancing bear illustrations framing it. Another page shows a stop at the "Indian Cave" on Meshoppen Creek with two women smiling in the ruins of a building. Later the travelers participate in a minstrel show with a group photo showing the performers in costume including blackface. Another page entitled "Mrs. Jarley's Wax Works" details the actors and their parts such as "Will, The Man that Broke the Bank," and "Edis as the Wizard of the Nile." The landscape of the area is also photographed featuring the waterfall at Meshoppen Creek, Lake Carey, and the "view from Rattlesnake Hill." A wonderful collection of travel photographs with intricate hand drawn embellishments. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 432153
