Artikelbeschreibung vom Verkäufer

Oblong quarto measuring 12" x 9.5". String-tied green cloth over paper boards. Contains 130 sepia toned or black and white silver photographs measuring between 2.25" x 3.5" to 5.5" x 8" with captions. Album is very good with age toning and wear on the board edges with near fine photographs. A photo album kept by Sergeant K.J. Turner while serving with the Royal Air Force (R.A.F.) in World War II between 1942 and 1944. Turner split his time with the Air Force between the R.A.F. station in Leeming, North Yorkshire, India, and Durban, South Africa. The photos show Turner with a number of different units including the men of the Number 14 and Number 7 squadrons posed for group photos around various bases including Skegness on the coast of England. Number 7 was also referred to as the "pathfinder force" and was used to scout bomber locations and eventually mark targets for Bomber Command. Turner then found himself with the 429 Transport Squadron, originally formed as a Bomber squadron combining Canadian and English pilots. The base at Durban was used as a training facility by the Royal Air Force during the war and Turner is pictured here with other trainees in a rickshaw, among native South Africans in traditional clothing, and watching Zulu dancing. One page entitled, "studies of African native life," shows a collection of commercially produced photography of the native Africans Turner was seeing including "Piccannins at meal time," "a Maxosa in meditation," and "native hairdressers in South Africa putting on the finishing touch." Turner takes snapshots of Bombay and Karachi with images showing the police directing traffic, the Bay of Bombay, and the Taj Mahal Hotel. Two photos show Karachi before and after a monsoon. They traveled throughout India to various cities including Jodhpur, and Allahabad as well as the Pakistan city of Lahore. These photos show R.A.F. boys with local railway officials, at the museum at Lucknow, and impersonating "Sikhs" which involved wearing a turban and posing as a yogi. Towards the end of the album the men are seen enjoying Christmas and a State dinner at Headquarters with snapshots of jovial officers after a drink or two. The album ends in 1944 and according to online war records Turner was captured and kept as a prisoner of war until the end of the conflict, although it is not clear who he was held by. An extensive collection of an R.A.F. Sergeant in India and Africa in the years leading up to his capture during World War II.
