Quarto measuring 7.5" x 10". Brown leather over stiff paper boards. Contains 204 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring around 4" x 5" with captions. Good only album lacking part of the spine with worn corners and chips with near fine photographs. A photo album from about 1890 depicting a group of travelers in the western United States. The photos don't appear to be in chronological order and show the group going to Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Tijuana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and California. The album begins on a train platform in Topeka, Kansas with candids of well-dressed travelers waiting for their train and standing by locomotives. Following this they photographed sights along their way including a lighthouse in California, commercial buildings, numerous trains, and grand homes. They also enjoyed the natural beauty of the country including climbing Pike's Peak and visiting the Garden of the Gods in Colorado, beaches of California, and various palms and ferns of the areas as well as photos of the pass fields, mountains, and valleys along the way. Also featured throughout the album are photo of Native Americans seen on their travels. One photo shows an old woman with her dog and is captioned "old Mexican and her dog Santa Monica;" another one reads "an old Indian 125 years old S. Cal." In Mexico they posed behind bars at the "old jail" and photographed young children on a donkey. Many photos show boats off the coast of California and include photos of the coast itself with images of the Cliff house in San Francisco and caves of La Jolla.
