Front hinge detached and some edgewear else very good with near fine photographs. A large photo album kept by a Wisconsin woman who went on a Western American roadtrip with family and friends in 1948. The album begins with a United States map which plots out the course of the trip Beginning in Wisconsin and heading west through the Dakotas, up to the Pacific Northwest, down through California, through the Southwest (skipping Texas), up to Colorado, through Kansas, Missouri, up to Illinois, and home. Additionally included in the middle of the trip photos is a 13 page typed "journal" detailing the trip and affixed to two album pages entitled "Our Western Trip." It begins "on September 7th, 1948 we left Merlin on that long planned for western trip. The scenery along the Mississippi River to Winone was beautiful." The beginning photographs show the travelers packing their car and heading off through Minnesota. An early stop was to the Corn Palace which was a week away from its opening and is seen here with scaffolding along the exterior. They stopped at the Badlands, Devil's Tower in Wyoming, and Dinosaur Park in South Dakota. Photos from the Black Hills shows the landscape of the National Park including views of the Needles Highway. These also show Mount Rushmore listing the presidents' names underneath. Many of the stops along the way are natural highlights of the American West featuring mountains, geysers in Yellowstone, rivers, and wildlife including bears. While in the Pacific Northwest they went to British Columbia for a bit before heading down the West coast photographing Redwood trees and views around San Francisco. They visited Catalina Island and Los Angeles photographing palm trees, Grauman's Chinese Theatre, and other sites around the city. From there they visited the Grand Canyon and Carlsbad with images of the rock formation and the Carlsbad caves. The final pages show Pike's Peak and the Garden of the Gods in Colorado and end with images from Lincoln's Tomb. The last photo is presumably from Wisconsin and features snow drifts around a family home but is uncaptioned. From the stop at Yosemite the journal reads, "the park itself was a disappointment after seeing Glacier Park. It consisted of very high sheer rock with a flat grassy valley which was unusual, however Yosemite Park has many lovely waterfalls but these were all dried up on account of the dry summer." Later it reads, "Saw Hollywood Bowl which is an immense open auditorium built on the side of a mountain. Dewey had given a speech there the preceding night. Walked around Grauman's Chinese Theatre and read the inscriptions and foot prints of the movie stars." A big thrill in Hollywood was seeing "the world's largest bowling alley consisting of 52 lanes." The pages continue like this adding details to the trip from beginning to end. The pages end back home with the final line reading, ".then homeward bound a very happy bunch, to report on all the wonders we has seen on our vacation and so grateful that we could live in green, fertile beautiful Wisconsin, even though we have some bad words to say about our long, cold winter --- home is best." A nice collection of Western American travel photography with a detailed account of the trip. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 419799
