Beschreibung
Oblong quarto. Measuring 10" x 7". String tied, black flexible boards. Contains 385 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 1" x 0.75" and 9" x 6.5" with some captions. Some small chips on the spine ends and lacking the front cover, near fine with fine photographs. A young girl s high school photo album from Roseburg, Oregon in 1908 through 1913. The girl, Jane Wharton, attended Roseburg High School and can be seen traveling to other states and going on camping trips with her friends. Some of the places visited include Portland, Oregon; Wincester, Massachusettes; and Redlands, California. Often places, names, and humorous phrases are captioned or written on the verso of the photographs, "Will eat anything. Very fond of children." Wharton is almost always seen with a few girls and boys from her "Ugo Igo" Club and Crest Council Club. The pictures show the group traveling around, dressing in costumes, playing baseball, and drinking at parties together, "Seven devils in place of one." A few of the photographs are interestingly hand-cut around full bodies and portraits with magazine cut-outs placed around them, one of which humorously has another girl placed inside of a cooking pot. There are also double exposures, cyanotypes, and real photograph postcards included in the album which feature the vast landscapes and wooded areas of Oregon. Wharton herself is often seen driving the group around in her own automobile wearing detailed dresses or in men s clothing when she is in costume. An interesting bit of ephemera laid into the album is a letter from an old admirer detailing how he has kept a picture of Wharton and her friends with him for over 30 years, "This picture has been wife, family and religion to me ever since I left school." Information not included in the album includes Wharton s life after highschool in which she attended Oregon State College and would later work for Dean of Forestry, George W. Peavy. After returning to Roseburg, Jane worked as a secretary serving Senator Guy Gordon and Judge Carl Wimberly. A charming and aesthetically pleasing photo album of a young girl s travels around Oregon with her friends, 1908-1913. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 432595
