Beschreibung
Oblong quarto. Stitched quarter calf and batik-style printed paper over boards with thick leaves with untrimmed edges and label indicating the album was made in Italy for New York-based Dante Gambinossi . Calf partially eroded, silk ties broken, very good with fine photographs. Includes 273 sepia-toned gelatin silver photographs. Various sizes, most approximately 4" x 3", a few larger, and two panoramas of the farm each made with four images placed together. A little sparsely but neatly captioned, conveying most of the salient information. Three clippings laid in. "The Covert" was built in 1931 in Crest Hill, Virginia (which seems from context might have been in Fauquier in the northeastern part of the state). The album begins with a few image of the construction of the house and continues through 1933. Most of the images are of the well-appointed farmhouse, its interiors and grounds, outbuildings, and neighboring properties, but with a generous portion - perhaps a third of the images - devoted to equestrian pursuits including active images of riding, carriages and wagons, hounds, and fox hunting. While several of the horsemen, horeswomen, and horses are identified, the seeming owner of the album and of "The Covert" seems only to be identified by initials:" W.D.K." or "Wallace". The album presents a perfect microcosm of society life among the well-to-do hunting set in a narrowly focused time period and geographic area. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 420075
