A collection of over two hundred illustrations published in the popular nineteenth century satiric magazine, Punch. The fourth series of Pictures of Life and Character, containing a over two hundred illustrations and cartoons from Punch. Established in 1841, Punch was a weekly magazine combining verbal and graphic political satire with light cultural commentary. Influential in its first two decades, the magazine helped to coin the term 'cartoon' to describe a humorous illustration. John Leech is best known for his illustrations in the magazine, and was also the first illustrator of Charles Dickens' famous 1843 novella, A Christmas Carol. Previous owner pencil inscription to the recto of the front endpaper, 'Reese Stan Thorfe'. In the publisher's original blue cloth binding with pictorial front board. Externally, sound. Rubbed to the boards with some moderate wear to the extremities. Rubbed to the spine with some small chips in the cloth along the front joint and some loss of cloth to the tail of the spine. The front hinge has failed but is attached by the remaining spine and cloth. The rear hinge is starting, but firm. Internally, pages are generally firmly bound except for the first eight pages which are rather loose. Pages are clean and lightly age-toned, but get brighter to the rear. Good.
