Full period black leather binding, 5 raised band spine and boards ornamented with gilt stamped/embossed title surrounded by floral detailed compartments, marbled end papers, profusely illustrated with steel and wood engravings throughout. Each volume is personalized, see spine heel, marked "J.A.W." Measures: 2.25 (7 overall) W x 10.25 D x 13.25 H inches. About the author and work: Bayard Taylor (January 11, 1825 December 19, 1878) was an American poet, literary critic, translator, travel author, and diplomat. The Europe series is known as a popular 19th century work with illustrations that support the historical location descriptions. Condition notes: Very good; light wear commensurate with age and use (e.g. board wear at extremities - rubbed/loss of color, age-toned text pages), hinges intact and appear strong, vol. 1 & 3 strong square spines/tight bindings, vol. 2 strong spine/slightly cocked/tight binding, overall a nice clean set with some shelf wear.
