It was a land inhabited by kings and queens, princes and princesses, and agents taking ten per cent. The land was called Hollywood. Now Hollywood may have been where these fabled folk worked, but it wasn't where they played. Instead they went to a beautiful pink palace on acres and acres of land, where they were pampered and coddled with extravagant suites and bungalows, a swimming pool always heated to between 70 and 72 , tennis courts equipped with champion pros, luxuriant grounds, and good, large drinks. This heavenly place for casual conversation, million-dollar wheeling and dealing, and torrid affairs was called the Beverly Hills Hotel. The Pink Palace opens all the doors at this fabulously successful hotel. The doors to its history: Built by an oil company that struck water, the Beverly Hills catered to wealthy Easterners wintering in Southern California. (Dorothy Parker called it the place where elephants go to die.) The doors to its management: have included Irene Dunne, Loretta Young and Hernando Courtright, a flamboyant showman who made the Beverly Hills the most chic place in town. All the hotel's operators are here, from the early founders to the present management. And there are tidbits about individual larcenies practiced by some of the staff on some of the guests - and vice-versa. The doors to its rooms, suites, and bungalows: Gable had his affair with Lombard here. Yves Montand with Marilyn Monroe. John Kennedy with a gaggle of girls - during the Presidential campaign. Evelyn Keyes with Mike Todd, pre-Elizabeth Taylor. Howard Hughes kept four bungalows, but allowed the plumbing to be used in only two of them. He ate dinner in his bungalow, Jean Peters ate in hers, and they conversed over the phone between bites. Ali McGraw fooled around with Steve McQueen, who wasn't her husband. Joanne Woodward with Paul Newman, who was. And the doors to its near-legendary bar, the Polo Lounge: It's said that more movie deals have been made in this dimly-lit cocktail lounge than in all the studio offices in town. Paramount Pictures was sold over drinks to Gulf and Western. Arthur Miller talked Clark Gable into doing The Misfits, the-film that killed him. Gary Grant counseled Lance Reventlow on the fine points of divorce during the latter's shedding of Jill St. John. President Sukarno of Indonesia ogled Marilyn Monroe across the room and then decided to transfer his entourage of two hundred from the Ambassador to the Beverly Hills. Warren Beatty spotted Leslie Caron among the artificial plants and began his pursuit. Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra started a brawl and were officially banned. W. C. Fields requested and received a table for two - for him and his man-eating plant. This then is a look at the people and happenings that have made the Beverly Hills Hotel one of the spots to be seen - and not to be seen. Here is glamour, gossip, and an absorbing study of how a legend was made. Before she wrote this book, Sandra Lee Stuart, like Hernando Courtright, had little hotel experience except for having stayed at several. She was a book editor and a newspaper reporter before writing The Last Chance Diet with Dr. Robert Linn and compiling Who Won What When. She now lives in Princeton, New Jersey.
