In 4° (20 x 14,6). Cc. (8)+168. Splendido frontespizio xilografico a bordura; numerosissime illustrazioni nel testo. Timbro di antica biblioteca americana dismessa "Mercantile Library - New York" al titolo e all'ultimo foglio; analogamente timbro a secco di altra istituzione dismessa alle medesime carte. Piccolo foro di tarlo al margine interno delle cc. 56-76, senza perdita. Nota manoscritta a penna al risguardo anteriore che attesta il dono alla Mercantile Library da parte di Philip A. Roach, datata 1848. Buona legatura settecentesca tutta pelle maculata, dorso rifatto in stile settecentesco; estremità dei piatti restaurate. Terza edizione, virtualmente identica alla prima del 1540, di questo trattato di estrema importanza sulla mineralogia e la manipolazione dei metalli. Il chimico Biringucci (Siena 1480-1539) costruì fornaci e mantici e radunò in maniera organica le sue osservazioni sulle applicazioni lavorative, in particolare quelle militari (come ricordato estensivamente in MIELI, Scienziati italiani dall'inizio del medioevo al nostri giorni, Roma 1921). The work contains the first accounts of silver amalgamation, the use of sodium chloride for separating gold and silver from baser metals, the first description of cobalt blue and manganese, and the earliest account of metallic antimony [See Neville Library and Singer, Hist. of Technology III, p. 30] Other sections discuss mining, smelting, alchemy, the reverbartory furnace, the process of glassmaking, the distilling of acids, the production of gunpowder, the making of chemicals used in warfare, the founding of cannon etc. The "Pirotechnica" also contains the first known account of type casting for printing.
