Cet ouvrage s'ouvre sur le Plan général de l'oeuvre des convulsions, généralement attribué à Henri-Anne-Daniel de Gennes : il y défend les aspects les plus controversés du mouvement convulsionnaire (scènes scabreuses, secours meurtriers) par des renvois à l'Évangile. Lui suit un autre texte anonyme, qui répond point par point aux critiques de monsieur l'Abbé de L. (François-Hyacinthe Delan) sur le Plan général de l'oeuvre des convulsions. Les débats que suscita le mouvement convulsionnaire sont d'un grand intérêt pour l'histoire de la religion, et cet ouvrage souligne qu'on s'y inquiète aussi bien de théologie que de faits de société : les deux auteurs, en effet, soutiennent que les aspects négatifs du mouvement convulsionnaire ne sont que le symptôme d'une église malade et d'une religion en crise.
