Inhaltsangabe: Planet UN presents an in-depth analysis of the United Nations' involvement in the areas of peace, development and human rights. It offers a unique and uncompromising perspective on the international organization as it confronts the challenges of the twenty-first century.

Serious food and energy shortages, climate change, terrorism, nuclear threats, the collapse of the international financial system... The modern afflictions of the planet threaten the very existence of future generations. Every nation in the world is effected, and even the superpowers have been shaken. Clearly, a concerted effort on a universal scale is called for.

What better forum than the United Nations to begin this essential dialogue? But is the UN capable of adapting and changing? It must be. Because yet another serious challenge is looming. That of the rich and emerging nation-states, which reinforce one another within the framework of G8 and other economic forums, assuming the reins of the entire planet, leaving along the wayside the less well-developed countries, and at the same time marginalizing the sole international arena where their voices can yet be heard: the United Nations.

Planet UN brings together for the very first time in a single volume the testimonies of the last five Secretaries-General of the United Nations: Ban Ki-moon, Kofi Annan, Boutros Boutros-Ghali, Javier Perez de Cuellar and Kurt Waldheim, as well as those of Noam Chomsky, Stanley Hoffmann, Lewis Lapham, Samantha Power, Ignacio Ramonet, Stephen Schlesinger, Joseph Stiglitz, James Traub, Ted Turner,...

With a CD-Rom containing one of the most extenisve documentary compiliations ever produced on the United Nations as well as an exclusive interview with James Hoge editor of Foreign Affairs.

Über den Autor: ROMUALD SCIORA was born in Paris in 1970. As a filmmaker, he has directed a dozen political documentaries. He is also the author of a book on the Middle East and two plays. He was on the faculty of Saint Joseph University for a year where he taught courses on reality-based filmmaking.
In 2006, he produced/directed a TV series of four documentary films entitled At the Glass Building in which the Secretaries-General of the United Nations recount the first sixty years of the UN. This veritable documentary panorama, which was distributed worldwide, was accompanied by a book written by Romuald Sciora and with a preface by French President Jacques Chirac.
In 2008, he directed the second part of his documentary opus on the United Nations: Panet UN, which focuses on the Organization at the beginning of the 21st century. The filmed interviews are at the very heart of his new book, also called Planet UN. Taken as a whole, these two segments combined represent the most important and significatn audiovisual and literary work ever produced about and in association with the United Nations.
Mr. Sciora represents a new generation of intellectuals who are committed on a global level. Together with Estelle Moser, he is the founder and director of NGO United Media. He lives in New York City.

ANNICK STEVENSON was born in Lyons, France in 1948. She is a journalist and writer and worked for nearly twenty-five years in various United Nations press offices, principally in New York and Geneva. In her last function at the UN she was spokesperson for Sergio Vieira de Mello, the High Commissioner for Human Rights who was killed in the August 19, 2003 attack on the United Nations offices in Baghdad.
In addition to the hundreds of articles published in numerous newspapers and magazines, she is the author of: Sergie Vieira de Mello, an Exceptional Man (Tricorne, 2004); Blanche Meyer et Jean Giono(Actes Sud, 2007). She has also translated and adapted the French edition of KOFI ANNAN, written by Fred Eckhard (Tricorne, 2009).
She is a correspondent at the United Nations in Geneva, where she is a founding member of the International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights as well as the literary critic for the Lyons daily Le Progres, for which she also contributes articles on international politics.
