Numbered plate from a photo album. Albumen print [8 x 6"], mounted on paper [9 x 11"]. From the album "Sun Pictures of Rocky Mountain Scenery" (F. V. Hayden, Julius Bien, 1870). Lightly foxed. Andrew Joseph Russell (1829-1902) was a 19th century photographer known for his photographs of the American Civil War (he was one of the few Civil War photographers that was a soldier as well) and Union Pacific Railroad. In 1865 he became the official photographer for the Union Pacific Railroad. According to the Oakland Museum of California web site, Russell was "One of a handful of landscape photographers who shaped our perception of the American West in the 19th century. A. J. Russell's work stands alongside of Carlton Watkins, Eadweard Muybridge and Timothy O'Sullivan in its aesthetic power and technical virtuosity."
