This is the first edition of renowned 19th century classical scholar George Grote’s three-volume work that placed him foremost among Plato scholars and served "as a sequel and supplement" to his voluminous History of Greece. The bindings are elaborate 19th century polished calf, with raised spine bands, tooled compartments, red title and black volume labels, double gilt and blind rule cover borders, tooled turn-ins, hand-marbled endpapers and marbled page edges. Grote (1794-1871) was an English historian and political thinker, a banker by family trade who nonetheless "made time to pursue his true calling – study and scholarship" and became impressively self-taught, not only in the literature of Greece and Rome, but in philosophy and political economy, as well as French, German, and some Italian. (ODNB) Grote’s philosophical compulsions were also contemporary, inclining to political radicalism and reasoned atheism, authoring works on both parliamentary reform and the social impacts of religion. Grote began his mammoth History of Greece in 1823. A decade in Parliament (1832-1841) with dwindling prospects for the radical reforms he advocated led Grote to abandon both politics and banking in favor of scholarship. This three-volume work – Grote’s last-completed major work - "describes a portion of Hellenic philosophy; it dwells upon eminent individuals as contrasted with those collective political and social manifestations which form the matter of history which the modern writer gathers from Herodotus, Thucydides, and Xenophon. This separate work featuring Socrates and Plato is justified by the author on the grounds that "it is impossible to do justice to either of them – above all, to Plato except in a book of which philosophy is the principal subject, and history only the accessory." Grote’s turn to Greek philosophy saw him arguably at the height of his scholarly powers and after nine years produced this three-volume work, which benefitted from the foundational scholarship that had produced the History of Greece. This beautifully bound set needs re-backing and restoration of the bindings, but features notably clean and bright contents, which retain a crisp feel with no previous ownership marks and show spotting only in the first and final leaves. The bindings show wear and scuffing. The second and third volume bindings remain intact, though with splits at the upper front hinges. The Volume One front cover is detached. We are pleased to recommend binding services upon request. Buchnummer des Verkäufers 004077
