Fite, Warner, 1867-1955. The Platonic Legend. New York, London: Charles Scribner's sons, 1934, A edition, viii, 331pp., very good dust-jacket but with small tear at top of spine, cover price $2.50, very good. There has grown up around Plato, Professor Fite points out, a sort of legend, and in the course of time this legend has completely obscured and altered the actual views and teachings of the great Greek philosopher. The author maintains, for instance, and makes it very clear, that Plato's sympathies were all with the aristocracy, that he was no believer in equal opportunity, that his conception of love was not concerned with the relation of man and woman - that, in fact, his real views are in many cases the exact opposite of those which he is commonly thought to have held. Professor Fite, Stuart Professor of Ethics at Princeton University and widely known for his lectures and writings in the field of ethics and philosophy, is a recognized authority, so that this really revolutionary work would seem to call for a complete reappraisal of our ideas about Plato and what he taught. The book is addressed to the general reader. It is, in a word, a popular presentation of Plato s life, times and teachings, seen in an entirely new light. The chapters on Plato's political and economic views, for instance, will come as something of a shock to those liberals who have been quoting him. - CONTENTS: The divine figure -- The ideal city and the open career -- Platonic morals and the modern sentiment -- Platonic true liberty -- Socrates the martyr -- Democratic Athens -- The aristorcratic republic -- Platonic love -- The metric method -- The scientific prepossession -- The mathematical mind -- The "consummate artist" -- Moralist and man.
