Chapter One

In the Beginning: Coaching in the Recreational League

Back in the late nineties, I told my wife that I was interested in volunteering as a coach in the city's recreational league in Auburn, Alabama. Our children, Adrienne and R. J., were approaching the age that they could handle playing a team sport, so she signed me up as a soccer coach.

Immediately I began to think, I'm getting off on the wrong foot (no pun intended). The thought of coaching soccer made me very skeptical because I knew nothing about the sport and had never been interested in it growing up. I thought about how I was going to have to coach kids in a sport I did not play. The thought of doing so seemed totally awkward to me.

Yes, it is very important for you to understand and be familiar with playing the sport you want to coach. If you have never played it or any sport, don't worry—you can learn! Coaching youngsters is a great experience, and you don't want to fail at it. Luckily, there is a lot of support out there! For starters, the Auburn Parks and Recreation Office held a mandatory meeting of all coaches, and we were required to watch a film on coaching youth. Although the film was an hour long, I paid attention. I was a fish out of water. I had been around some great coaches throughout my life, such as high school basketball coach Gid Riddle at Gadsden High School and Alabama State University coaches George James, Jim Parker and Earl Cheatham, but I knew nothing about the art of coaching.

When my son started playing recreational league football, I watched with great interest the head coaches of the first two teams he played on. Benji Roland and the late Kurt Crain were former Auburn Tigers under Coach Pat Dye back in the 1980s. Coach Dye had a "five yard and a cloud of dust" mentality on offense, which stressed tough offensive lines and even rougher defenses. Roland and Crain's recreational league teams were the same way. Their offensive lines were well coached and used great techniques and would dominate you up front so they could run the ball on you, while their defensive lines would stifle your offense with a tough tackling defense. The way they coached their players was equally rough. They didn't cut the players any slack, even when it came to their own sons.

Watching them shaped my approach to coaching in the recreational league early on, but I learned some valuable lessons on my own too.

I was determined to be on top of my game as a coach because I knew the seriousness of coaching the children of other parents. There are two things I will never forget from the film, and I encourage you to remember them as well if you ever coach a sport in a recreational league: (1) Make sure you teach the players the game, and (2) Make sure they remain interested in the game and return next year.

The importance of coaching in the recreational league cannot be understated. It carries a huge amount of instructional responsibility. As far as sports and athletics go, you are the first person they will see as a teacher on the field of play. The relationship between the coach and student- athlete is one that takes place naturally, meaning that at every level the student-athlete attains there is a coach also teaching and guiding them.

Here are the responsibilities that coaches have at each level.

RECREATIONAL LEAGUE COACH

The recreational league coach is usually a child's first coach. Your role is to teach youngsters the fundamentals and hopefully cultivate a passion for their chosen sport. Yes, even those players who are in elementary school are student-athletes! Don't get caught up in their cuteness and miss the opportunity to really teach them something about proper technique and sportsmanship. They are not too young to take the game seriously, and if you are coaching a team full of seven- and eight-year-olds in any sport, remember that this age group is impressionable. This is a great age to teach them some good lessons about life, because I can assure you that the negative influences aren't waiting until they get older.

They are not too young to learn about responsibility, eating well, avoiding steroids, juggling homework and practice, and the importance of being on time for practice and games.

You can also instill in kids this age what sportsmanship is and teach them that the fun part is being out there learning something they want to play. The recreation coach lays a foundation for children who will play at the junior varsity, prep school, and college level, where competition for positions is more intense. If you do your job well, they will be ready once they get to the junior and high school level.

JUNIOR/HIGH SCHOOL COACH

The junior high and high school coaches build on the skills a student-athlete has learned in recreation league ball. That training provides a foundation for a much more demanding level of play and competition for positions on a team.

Coaches at this level assess children's skills and determine whether or not they will make the team. They make real for these athletes that cutting and bench play might be a possibility, especially if they can't keep pace with their team members or are unable to maintain acceptable grades. Most important, coaches at this level prepare young athletes mentally and physically for college ball and hand them off to the college coaches.

COLLEGE COACH

At this level, collegiate coaches help student-athletes build on the skills they have gained at the high school level and examine how an athlete's performance contributes to the overall success of the program. More responsibility...
