Buchbeschreibung London, Newnes. n.d. (1902), 1902. Tall folio (10 1/2 x 14 1/2 ins, 270 x 370mm) publisher's pictorial cloth with striking Art Nouveau motif, rubbed, and this heavy book is slightly shaken overall. 48 coloured plates - photographs, hand-coloured in the studio and with backgrounds and details added by hand, mounted on stiff grey card with flimsy overlays detailing the career of the performer and their latest "hits". The hand-drawn backgrounds range from just tinting, to very elaborate art nouveau frames and swirls of colour. Includes a portrait of William Gillette in the First Theatrical Appearance in 1901 of Sherlock Holmes, and showing him using the famous curved pipe, not a straight pipe as in Paget's illustrations, to allow his face to be better seen on stage. He also introduced the line "Oh this is elementary my dear fellow" later adopted and altered by Clive Brook in the first talking film. Also included are Fred and Ellen Terry, Weedon Grossmith, Sarah Bernhardt, Forbes Robertson, George Alexander (fresh from Wilde's Lady Windamere's Fan), Beerbohm Tree et al. Buchbeschreibung London: George Newnes, n.d. [1902], 1902. First Edition. Publisher's cloth; minor rubbing; very good; the interior is in near fine condition. The volume consists of 48 color portraits, each mounted on a leaf with a preceding biographical page. Among the best of these portraits is one of Gillette as Holmes. Unlike the other portraits, Bernhardt, Irving, Terry, Tree, etc., which are color renditions of photographs, this is an original illustration. Of additional Sherlockian interest is the portrait of Seymour Hicks, who appeared in "Under The Clock". Buchnummer des Verkäufers 23817
