Leather. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). A collection of poetry by two different authors, bound in one volume. Bound in full leather, with decorative marble endpapers. John Philips' poem, Splendid Shilling was described by Joseph Addison as "the finest burlesque poem in the English language." It was written in blank verse in the style of Milton. A number of his other imitations are included in this collection, most notably Cyder, which was an imitation of Vergil's Georgics. Ambrose Philips was in his day an established poet of pastorals and odes. A stuanch whig he was friends with Addison and Steele and a regular at Button's coffee house. He had a vitriolic on-going war with Alexander Pope and the two seemed to have spent much time lampooning each other. Bound in full leather, with decorative marble endpapers. There is some wear to the extremities, including marks to the boards and bumping to the corners. The spine is cracking with some loss, and the title label is partially missing. The binding is tight and firm although the hinges are starting to strain and the cords are visible in one place. Internally, the pages are bright and clean with only the very occasional brown spot or handling mark. There is a bookplate on the front pastedown. Overall, apart from the wear to the spine, this volume is in very good condition. Very Good. book. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers LTH5-B-16
