An early edition of the collected poems of William Cowper, an important forerunner of the Romantic era. The third edition.Complete in two volumes.A collection of poetry by the Romantic poet William Cowper. These volumes include 'Table Talk', 'Charity', 'John Gilpin', 'The Task', and more.William Cowper was a popular English poet who helped initiate the Romantic movement, with his descriptions of life in the English countryside. After a stint of being institutionalised for insanity, Cowper recovered and began focusing on writing religious works. He was strongly against slavery, using his poems to try and support the Abolitionist campaign. Many of the poems published in this work were written on recovery of Cowper's attack of insanity, where he believed he was eternally condemned to hell. The influence of this experience can be seen in his pieces, 'The Progress of Error' and 'Human Frailty'.One page of adverts to the rear of Volume II.Bookplate to the front paste downs.
