First edition. Octavo ( 203mm. ) Pp.[2] iii-xvi, 1-240. Plates [1], frontispiece by Isaac Taylor. Twelve page subscribers list. Very light waterstaining in the tail margins to p.xvi; sig.b1(r) very lightly browned. Contemporary calf lightly rubbed, the spine with five raised bands, red title label, head of spine chipped. Overall a very good clean fresh copy of the first issue of the first edition ( a second issue was published in London the same year with a new titlepage. ) Cunningham, John (1729-1773), a native of Dublin, he was a wandering actor for very many years, and not very successfully, however he went to gain a considerable reputation as a poet in which he was much encouraged by David Garrick. ' His best efforts were in the poetry of the landscape, and here he was influenced by current interests in the Gothic and the picturesque' - ODNB.This book was probably first published in Newcastle, because his wandering life and resulting ill health had forced him to retire there For more details of Cunningham see ODNB.
