A nicely bound copy of The Poet at the Breakfast Table. The Poet at the Breakfast Table was the final of Holmes' popular 'Breakfast-Table' works. Preceding The Poet was The Autocrat at the Breakfast Table and The Professor at The Breakfast Table. This particular edition is undated, dated from Copac. Holmes gained international fame from his Breakfast-Table series. The table talk books attracted a wide audience due to their conversational style. Homes' intentions were to mimic the philosophical debates and pleasantries which occur around the breakfast table. The subjects discussed range from medicine to theology, society, democracy, science, the natural world as well as sex and gender. The Poet was published some time after the previous two titles, in the later stages of Holmes' career. It's tone is more mellow and nostalgic than The Professor. In a full calf binding with gilt stamping to the spine and board edges. Spine has faded slightly, as expected with this colour. Externally, very smart with very light rubbing to the joints. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Internally, firmly bound. A large square of heavy offsetting to pages 96-7 from something previously inserted.
