A scarce Pickering edition Though intended to follow his father into the butcher's trade, White (1785-1806) was a great enthusiast for the written word, giving reading lessons in secret to a family servant by the age of 7. As his talents emerged, the decision was taken to article him to a lawyer. As a trainee, he excelled at his Classical studies. In 1803, he published a volume containing Clifton Grove and several other poems (contained herein); whilst the work was savaged in the tabloid press, it earned White words of encouragement from Robert Southeby. Thanks to the efforts of his friends, White was able to enter St. John's, Cantab., but his zealous penchant for overstudy wrought great stresses upon him, and he died suddenly in 1806.
