'Household Edition.' There are one dozen illustrations, full-page, all in excellent condition. This is not an uncommon book. The monetary value of it lies wholly in the beautiful binding and in the very solid condition of the book. You can see the pebbled leather covers in the photos. They would be closer to perfect were it not for the scuff on the front cover (first photo), a superficial knife wound/scar resulting from a disagreement over a poem. There is also light scuffing at both sides of the spine, and it's top and bottom edges, and at a few spots in between. The gilt lettering on the spine is very bright and free of wear. They went for fancy on the cover edges, they have a gilt decoration. That's for when you're really not kidding around. While there are a few very tiny scuffs on the top and middle cover edges (none on the bottom ones) these edges really glisten and announce themselves boldly. Though not as much as the page edges. These are as bright as I've ever seen them, like a block of gold, three blocks, particularly when the light illuminates. They are in terrific shape. The cover corners have just small spots of rubbing, nothing that spoils the appearance of the covers. The brown of the leather becomes closer to black at the side of the spine that is adjacent to the rear cover, and again on the rear cover just adjacent to the rear middle edge. Both the front and the rear cover are bordered by a very thin gilt line, the scanner is altering the gilt to white at the top line, that's not actually the case. The covers are perfectly square with a spine that is perfectly straight. The inside covers and endpapers are also fancy, fancy. I'll provide a photograph. The center of the inside covers has a green background and is adorned with a gilt design. The three borders have a brown leather background and a different gilt design. The endpapers have the same green and gilt design that the center of the inside covers display. The impact of the leather texture was to create a darkening of the green at the borders of the endpapers. The previous owner, who was gifted the book in 1891, had the bad sense of placing a small bookplate on the front inside cover. A woman is reading a book at a desk. The front inside end paper has a small white spot which I believe is a scuff. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. This is an exceptionally well-bound book. The pages are in excellent condition. They are very, very clean. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any soiling on any of the text pages or any of the illustration pages. There are two tan spots on the title page. My first impression was that they were tracings of something on the frontispiece, but that's not the case. So I guess they're just tan spots. The frontispiece looks perfect and the tissue guard protecting it is very clean and in excellent shape. The condition of the pages is very good. I've scrolled through them a good number of times. There is a little nick at the middle page edge and that's created a little nick at the edge of three or four pages, no tear, nothing much of anything. A good number of the early pages have a small crinkle at their top edge, not a crease, not something that's formed by the page being turned inward, more likely a little disturbance created by a little bump to the top page edge. There are no turned-down corners or placeholder creases. I saw one very tiny tear just off the edge of one page, not near to the print. There is a neatly cursive inscription on the second front blank end paper. It reads ' To Helen Ethel Wright from Harriet M. Cather, Merry Xmas 1891.' There are no markings in the book. The aforementioned bookplate is the only attachment, and the signed inscription is the only writing to be found anywhere. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 004164
