Campbell's Poetical Works are heavily influenced by his surroundings, travelling abroad create some of his most well-known pieces, such as "Ye Mariners of England", "Pleasures of Hope" and "Hohenlinden". These focused on topics surounding current events and influenced by social and military elements. Despite growing popularity, few readers knew much of Campbell's work beyond these. Thomas Campbell (1777-1844) was a Scottish poet, champion of education and founder of the Clarence Club.
