Beschreibung
Poetry in the Making, An Anthology of Poems and Programmes from Listening and Writing, Ted Hughes; Faber, 1967. Hardback. Inscribed by Ted Hughes in pencil 'To Sweet Sue from Ted love May 1968'. Almost certainly inscribed and given to the poet Susan Alliston, who Ted Hughes was having an extra-marital affair with at the time of Sylvia Plath's suicide. In his 2015 biography of Ted Hughes, Jonathan Bate reveals that Hughes was in bed with Alliston on the night Plath died. In his poem 'Last Letter', Ted Hughes also describes that he was with Susan Alliston on the night Sylvia Plath took her own life: 'That night my dellarobbia Susan. Susan and I spent that night In our wedding bed. I had not seen it Since we lay there on our wedding day. I did not take her back to my own bed. It had occurred to me, your weekend over, You might appear -a surprise visitation. Did you appear, to tap at my dark window? So I stayed with Susan, hiding from you, In our own wedding bed -the same from which Within three years she would be taken to die In that same hospital where, within twelve hours, I would find you dead. Monday morning I drove her to work, in the City, Then parked my van North of Euston Road And returned to where my telephone waited.' Susan Alliston died from Hodgkin's disease in 1969, passing away in the same hospital that Hughes visited to identify the body of Sylvia Plath in 1963 (as Hughes describes in the quote from 'Last Letter' above). Book has smoke damage to the front cover, spine and rear paste-down endpaper; other pages unaffected. This dates from a fire at his sister Olwyn Hughes' home in Kentish Town in 2013, when a cigarette fell behind a settee and started a blaze. Many books that belonged originally to Ted Hughes and thence to Olwyn Hughes and then to his daughter Frieda Hughes are similarly affected by smoke damage.
