He took Holy Orders (Deacon 1863, Priest 1864), but so enjoyed teaching in a school that he became an assistant master at Cheltenham College (1865-71) and Principal of Brighton College. AppointedÊRegius Professor of Ecclesiastical HistoryÊat theÊUniversity of Oxford in 1901, holding the post until his death.
