A profusely illustrated set of biographical works discussing significant personages in British history, written by the notable heraldic writer, Edmund Lodge. Twelve volumes, bound in six. The particular work features portraits of illustrious personages from Great Britain, accompanied by short biography of each notable person. Written by Edmund Lodge the notable herald and writer on heraldic subjects. The volume features the numerous famous public figures including Henry VIII, Catherine Par and Lady Jane Grey among others. Profusely illustrated throughout, with 20 plates to each of the twelve volumes. With a the bookplate of David Binning Monro to the five of six volumes. Monro was a Homer scholar who served as the Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University. In a half morocco binding, with marbled boards and fore edges. Externally, generally smart. Sunning to the spine. Rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, as well are to the raised bands joints and extremities. Front and rear hinges are very slightly strained, but firm. Previous owners bookplate to the front pastedown of five of the six volumes. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally clean, with occasional spotting and tidemarks, mainly affecting the illustrated plates.
